Roy G. Biv is turning in his grave
The state of 3D as a creative medium is abysmal. I was asked recently if I could produce a promo film in 3D. Hours of research later, I could not find a single application where a 3D scene doesn’t seem gratuitous (looking at you, GoBro reel!). Then I found this (glasses or crossed eyes required):
I don't wanna Die Antwoord
…but it’s FOK JULLE season. Gearing up for an unseasonably busy winter, with multiple projects in the pipeline. Nothing like being threatened with all sorts of anal trauma to ignite your holiday spirit! Odd Future, are you listening?

Bay for Pay
Found time to cram some footage together from a recent stint in the bay area. Most of my time was filled with work, but I managed to escape by night to the roof - camera in tow. This vignette represents the way I saw downtown San Francisco when I wasn’t toiling inside a building: through bleary, sleep deprived eyes, the pulsing beat of nightclubs defying the weeknights’ relative...

Recently... [UPDATED]
I spoke with someone today who, after complimenting my work, then laid into me because I said I don’t blog about it! My theory until today was that my work is best kept separate from my more sophomoric efforts here on my personal blog. But this kind gent persisted, noting enough valid points that I caved.
Here, by way of lengthy explanation, is one of the longer-term projects (read:...

An Earth Day Sprouting
Made a few pictures of local band Sprout’s performance at Alameda park for Earth Day 2011. Ambient mic feed died after the first song, so I re-dubbed the footage to panel feeds. Good times had by all. Thanks Steve, NewnoiseSB, and the soulful boys and girls of Sprout.
An Air France afternoon
It’s Hot. Hotter than is conducive to sitting in my office and debugging iOS code. Time to bang on some Air France and go for a cycle by the beach. Enjoy your thursgay, people.

A Day on the Ranch
Although it’s been a while since I’ve shot couture (and I never really liked it), I couldn’t help but fire up the 5D and head out to a friend’s ranch for a day shoot. Comrade Vija of coco does rio culled and edited a collection —and found three exquisite models— in a remarkably short period of time, and certainly from the results you’ll agree she’s...

The Kids Are All Right, You're All Wrong
Go out onto the street, right now, and ask the first hipster type you see what kind of music she likes. Chances are, you’ll either be scoffed at and ignored, or possibly she’ll respond with some unintelligible marble-mouthed niche genre like “nouveau alterna-queer-folk-acid-rock-a-betty dubsteppington the third” or whatever. My point is, everyone’s a music snob...

Articulate Kids @ Aikido Kenkyukai SB
In which I am astonished to find I am probably not smarter than a fifth grader…
I recently wrapped this shoot for a local nonprofit, Aikido Kenkyukai Santa Barbara. The shoot, for which Nick and I donated our time and equipment (pats back), was a challenge. While we loved working with Lia Suzuki Sensei [Exec. Director of AKSB and all-around go-getter], wrangling unruly children and...

I finally met my goal of taking a photo that stirs up some emotions and controversy. I submitted a series of photos from the MCA march on Saturday, to edhat. Among them was the photo I took of the woman holding the sign over the homeless man who had been previously sleeping. I intended the photo…
tl;dr, comrade Nick. But the story, oh the story you’ll tell.

Sooo, a million years ago, my trusty associate Keith and I decided to attend the Jónsi show in Oakland. Hah, “decided”! More like, “compelled against all odds” -which we truly must’ve been, because the show was most wretchedly scheduled for a Tuesday night. It’s amazing how minimal such details can seem when you’re...
SB Cancer Center's 5/10k Walk/Run
Although I am generally prone to sedentary pursuits on rainy days, I felt lucky to be able to go out and support the Santa Barbara Cancer Center’s 5k/10k walk/run this morning. Many of the runners (and obviously the volunteers) arrived early and in good spirits at Montecito Union School, the rendezvous point. The 10k run got underway on time at about 8:00 am, with the 5k following around...

It's For The Neighborhood:
Thursgay was textile craft day round the office. We bought some t-shirt blanks, dug up my old bottle of dye-discharge, and got to X-acto-ing some designs! Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs kept us company during the grueling hours of knife-wielding. (Seriously, it took forever)

Same-Sex Marriage Has Its Day In Court [Again]...
The Supreme Court has announced that an oral argument will be held in the Prop. 8 cases on Thursday, March 5, 2009, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The court will issue a written opinion in the cases within 90 days of oral argument.
I’ve posted some Prop 8 related material here before, thinking it would be kind of a sobering reminder to myself in the future. You know, like, ‘yikes,...
Jailbreak Monday

What an uncharacteristically awesome Monday!
‘Star’ jailbreak for the iPhone 4 is out, bringing with it the triumphant return of Grooveshark Mobile and all the awesome tools and tweaks that I can’t imagine living without: FaceTime over 3G*, MobiTerm, SSH, unsigned app execution… etc.

DeLillo, whiskey, me, and a blinking midnight...
Having recently been on an inexplicable grouchy postmodern lit-author bent, I was delighted to find this piece summarizing my feelings about Stephenson’s work perfectly. Moreover, I’m attracted to how the Millions’ Noah Deutsch casually drops my metaphysical pet terms, How and Why as human operations. Excerpt:
“Breezy as his fiction writing may be, Neal Stephenson has a penchant for deep...

If you’re like me, your computing platforms are becoming more integral to everyday life. The daily tasks we perform and entertainment quality we expect are demanding more of our desktop and mobile gear every day.
In the mobile development world, all the emphasis is on usability, with rich content taking a backseat due to battery and performance constraints. Previously, laptops were only...

The Internet is for Porn - an Avenue Q review
The internet is for porn. I learned this, and other such wicked revelations at last night’s opening of the Broadway musical Avenue Q. With a masterful young people-and-puppets cast, undeniably infectious music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, and a cantankerous collection of doesn’t-life-suck-sometimes skits, this production is an adorably dirty bomb of wit aimed directly at...
